Way back in 2004, I taught my first quilting class to a group of three and 4 year-olds! What an incredible experience!
The children painted fabric dye on 100% cotton sheeting and then placed an item from nature on top of the dye. The sun didn't come out that day so we had to be flexible and improvise with heat lamps to help make the heliographic prints.
After the dye was set and the fabrics washed, they were cut into rectangles and the children helped to sew the pieces into a simple pattern. For many children, this was the first time they saw and used an actual sewing machine.
I used a long arm sewing machine to quilt and highlight the natural patterns.
The quilt was auctioned off to support the cooperative preschool.
